Tip: Plain caramel hardens when chilled, so I add a bit of heavy cream to soften it into a slice-friendly consistency and allow it to ooze around the plate in a really mouthwatering way.

If homemade caramel is too much effort, feel free to use store-bought caramel sauce for the filling.

Banana Cake with Hazelnut Buttercream and Nutella Filling

When he was in kindergarten, my son Liam preferred to make his own toast in the morning, thank you very much. However, the amount of Nutella he loved to spread on it still kept me in the kitchen to make sure the rest of the jar could be spared for next time. He felt so grown-up, and I didn’t mind how cute his little face looked with a touch of Nutella on his cheeks. As expected, Nutella is very delicious in a cake, too, and goes especially well with bananas, as in this heavenly version.

This cake is a great way to use up any ripe bananas, and you could also add a few slices between the cake layers for even more banana flavor.
